History Centre Moves to Fort Saskatchewan

The Edmonton and District Historical Society’s History Centre is moving to the Fort Saskatchewan Museum & Historic Site.

The Edmonton and District Historical Society (EDHS) is one of Alberta’s oldest heritage institutions, tracing its origins to 1907. In recent years, the Society has offered curriculum based history programs through the History Centre, receiving enthusiastic endorsements from teachers and students who have participated in this hands-on learning experience.

The EDHS History Centre program is about to enter a new phase through an exciting new partnership with the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site and the City of Fort Saskatchewan. Effective October 2012, the History Centre programs will be taught in an Alberta museum located in the very heart of historic Fort Saskatchewan; a city that has excellent community programming and support through the Fort Saskatchewan Historical Society.

“The EDHS is thrilled that more students will be given this extraordinary opportunity to live the past. The Edmonton and District Historical Society anticipates that our partnership with the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site in the Peter T. Ream Historic Park will benefit students from all over the Capital region,” commented Tim Marriott, President, Edmonton and District Historical Society.

The Edmonton and District Historical Society is proud that its record of accomplishment in school programming will be continued and enhanced through this collaboration. The importance of history education is evident to all who observe a student, thoroughly engaged, demonstrate what she has learned about her community, its origins and its aspirations.

“Fort Saskatchewan is a wonderful balance of a vibrant, urban environment built on the foundation of a rich history. We have taken careful steps to weave our history into the fabric of our community and I believe our partnership with the History Centre shows our commitment to keeping the past alive for many generations to come,” remarked Mayor Gale Katchur.

“One of the main goals of the Historical Society is the education of the community, so this initiative will certainly help us in achieving this objective. It also will enhance the visibility, viability and potential of our Museum and Historic Site,” states Ray Thurston, President of the Fort Saskatchewan Historical Society.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring new people to the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site.  Students will get to experience history through various activities in a setting that inspires curiosity about how Alberta communities began and grew,” comments Diane Yanch, Culture and Historic Precinct Supervisor.

"That was a great day! Very informative and fun."
