Topics Covered in this Program
Connections to Culture takes place in our Historical Village and examines the following three topics:
- Métis Culture: In this session students learn about Métis culture and identity through hands on activities and discussion. Students will have the opportunity to try Métis jigging and finger weaving while being exposed to culturally significant art and music styles. Instructors also explain the symbolism in the flag and sash of the Métis nation and much more! This session is held in the 1909 Courthouse.
- Indigenous Culture and Treaty 6: Students learn about Indigenous cultures, traditions and beliefs through discussion about land acknowledgements, the signing of Treaty 6 and what it means to be Treaty people. They will also colour in a Treaty map of Alberta and learn about different groups from all over the province. This session is held in the 1905 Bolton School.
- Settlers on the Prairies: Students explore the different historic buildings on our site and learn about how they would have functioned in an early settler community. Special attention is given to the homes, the families that lived in them, and discussion about different settler groups that came to Alberta. This session takes place in the 1902 Castle School, 1907 Kulak House, Blacksmith shed, and 1917 Henry House.
